Baby, it's cold outside

As winter sets in and the days are shorter, it’s tempting to retreat into the warmth and comfort of our homes, crank up the heating and wait out the cold weather. Winter can be disruptive to exercise routines across all age groups – the morning walk or run isn’t quite so appealing if you’re starting in the dark.

Local Medowie physio, Mike from Medowie Family & Sports Physio, advises that seniors make their exercise routine social, “Take a class, join a walking group or arrange a walk with a friend. If your routine involves other people you’re less likely to cancel if there’s a cold start to the day and it’s much more enjoyable if you’re catching up with friends at the same time.” Residents at Blueheath at The Bower will have access to resort-style facilities in the clubhouse which will enable all year-round indoor swimming, a gym, group fitness classes and the opportunity to connect with those in a like-minded community to walk and exercise with.

Tips for staying active in cooler months

  • Make it social – you’re less likely to cancel and more likely to have fun!
  • Wear lots of layers and dress for the weather.
  • If walking or exercising outside, go in the warmest part of the day.
  • Exercise at home – since the pandemic there are many more opportunities to join exercise classes online and there are lots of simple stretching and strengthening exercises you can do at home.
  • Swim in a warm pool – indoor swimming is a great low impact cardio option.
  • Join a senior friendly gym – many gyms now have tailored classes for seniors.
